?? A street synonymous with Swinging London of the 60s or the Mod movement, but always a reference point for young London fashion, Carnaby Street is located in a spectacular part of London and runs parallel to Regent Street: pedestrianised, cool, active, full of shops, mostly boutiques with original clothes, it is a real pleasure. The intersection with the various arteries in the area, all in tune with each other, transforms it practically into a small shopping district/complex.
Rock culture has a lot to do with Carnaby: the proximity to historic clubs such as the Marquee, linked to the active participation of groups who did not just visit to buy clothes. Often, and this is still commonplace, businesses make space in their premises for rock bands to play inside, as part of promotional work for brands.
Closely related to Carnaby Street are Paul Weller and his band The Jam, The Rolling Stones – since September 2020 they have had their official store there at number 9 – The Sex Pistols and The Small Faces, the latter even enjoying a Westminster City Council Blue Plaque in the premises occupied by the sports company Puma (November 2014). Or Liam Gallagher, who had his clothing business, Pretty Green, on the corner of Beak Street for several years. Even Queen had their pop-up store on the famous street for a time in 2018 while promoting the film based primarily on the story of their singer Freddie Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Neil Peart (drummer for Rush) worked in a couple of shops in Carnaby, U2 filmed part of their 1991 video Even Better Than The Real Thing in a shop called Zoo and the street has been recalled or named in a number of songs.
The Jam recorded a song called Carnaby Street, The Kinks refer to it in Dedicated Follower of Fashion.
The restless spirit in Carnaby Street is palpable just by walking down it.
The Jam grabó una canción llamada Carnaby Street, The Kinks hacen referencia a ella en Dedicated Follower of Fashion.
