?? The site of Queen’s first concert on 18 July 1970 is now recognised by PRD For Music with a plaque unveiled by original band members Brian May and Roger Taylor. In that distant 1970 Brian was a student at Imperial College, but in 1974, when the Queen II album was released, he left his studies to devote himself full-time to the band. May returned to graduate there much later, receiving a PhD in Astronomy in 2007.
The concert was the first under that name, as until then the band had been known as Smile – the originator of the name change was Freddie Mercury, who until then had not changed his surname to Bulsara, by which he would become known worldwide – and was held at the university’s Union Concert Hall. It should be noted that the classic bassist John Deacon was not yet a member of the band, but his (future) place was taken by Mike Grose.
PRS for Music represents more than 95,000 songwriters and music publishers by protecting the rights to their works. The Association often recognises historical bands or soloists and some of the places where they started to give concerts that would, in a way, launch their careers. These plaque awards are not limited to London, but embrace the whole country.
In the case of Queen, they recognise the incredible achievements of a band that had 16 number one albums, 18 equally successful singles and more than 300 million records sold worldwide.

En aquel lejano 1970 Brian era alumno del Imperial College, pero en 1974, cuando el álbum Queen II fue editado, dejó sus estudios para dedicarse a la banda a tiempo completo. May regresó para recibirse en el lugar mucho tiempo después, recibiendo un doctorado en Astronomía en 2007.
El recital fue el primero con esa denominación ya que hasta entonces la banda era conocida como Smile -el ideólogo del cambio de nombre fue Freddie Mercury quien hasta entonces no habia cambiado tampoco su apellido Bulsara por el que sería mundialmente conocido- y se brindó en el Union Concert Hall de la universidad. Cabe destacar que aún no era miembro de la banda el clásico bajista John Deacon sino que su (futuro) lugar entonces era ocupado por Mike Grose.
PRS for Music representa a más de 95.000 compositores y editores musicales cuidando los derechos sobre sus obras. La Asociación suele reconocer a bandas o solistas históricos y algunos lugares donde comenzaron a dar conciertos que, de alguna forma, lanzaría sus carreras. Estos reconocimientos en forma de plaqueta no están limitados a Londres, sino que abracan todo el país.
En el caso de Queen, reconocen los increíbles logros de una banda que tuvo 16 álbumes número 1, 18 singles de igual éxito y más de 300 millones de discos vendidos a nivel mundial.
