?? London’s Underground (Tube) is something to be used, but also to be enjoyed. Its network is magnificent and its foresight and efficiency are enviable.
Of course, as something so present in the lives of Londoners, its importance has been documented in every possible way and hence it is found in various films, books and TV (including an excellent multi-part special programme launched by the BBC, appropriately called The Underground).
And it has also been perpetuated in various music video clips by various artists, such as Sir Paul McCartney.
One of the few good scenes in the 1984 film Give my Regards to Broad Street, was the one at the entrance to the Tube at Leicester Square station, in that triangle formed on Charing Cross Road, Cranbourn Street and St. Martin’s Court.
In the scene, the former Beatle is imagining having to make a living as a street musician, after the theft of the tapes for what was to be his next album.
While doing an amusing parody of the song Yesterday at the station entrance during one of the film’s scenes, some unsuspecting passers-by gave him some coins, which the artist later donated to charity.
It is worth noting that Paul’s relationship with the London Tube in the 1980s was not limited to this performance, as one of the best promotional videos of his career (the one for the song Press) was filmed in various central stations, such as Bond Street Station (Central Line), South Kensington (Piccadilly) and Westminster (Circle – District – Jubilee).
