Otros clientes fueron: Asia, Coldplay, Duran Duran, Jamiroquai, Bryan Ferry, Oasis, XTC, The Jam, Oasis, Blur Queen, Bob Dylan, Def Leppard, The Jam, Frank Zappa, Suede y Placebo. Peter Gabriel grabó su 3er LP y masterizó “Us” en The Townhouse.

The studio was sold in order to transform the site into luxury flats. The studios are best known as the place where Blur recorded The Great Escape, Coldplay recorded X&Y, The Jam recorded Setting Sons and Pulp recorded Different Class. Several others, including Elton John, Oasis, Muse and Robbie Williams, have also recorded there over the years. “It’s sad when our historic legacy is lost sight of,” rock historian Adrian Bray told London newspaper The Evening Standard. “All the iconic music venues are disappearing. The Townhouse is not a beautiful building and its economic life is clearly over, but it is significant. The fact is that if the council let Hammermsith Palais disappear without looking back, this place didn’t stand a chance.”
Founded by Richard Branson for his Virgin emporium in 1978, and located on the corner of Goldhawk and Godolphin, in the heart of the historic “Who” area. Branson later sold it to EMI, who in 2002 sold it to the Sanctuary Group. In 2008 they closed the studio for good, and at the time of writing (late 2014), the building was about to be redeveloped for housing.
The fame and history of the studios are more than justified by a simple mention: the best-selling single of all time since the implementation of the official UK and US charts in 1950 was recorded here (Bing Crosby’s White Christmas – from 1942 – is presumed to be the biggest seller at over 100 million, but there is insufficient evidence of sales before 1950). So let’s just say that Candle in The Wind in its 1997 version, by Elton John and with production by Sir George Martin is, in both the UK and the US, the fastest selling single in history, and is the only single to be awarded a Diamond Record for sales of over 11 million copies in the US (Source: RIAA – Recording Industry Association of America).
Elton recorded it as a tribute to his friend Lady Di after her death in Paris. Worldwide, the song sold more than 33 million copies.
Looking back through history we see other moments of glory at The Town House: Pulp recorded their most successful album here (Different Class) and This Is Hardcore; The Sweet, the famous glam band, were the first to record here; Muse, parts of Black Holes And Revelations; Yes recorded much of their controversial album Drama, on which they replaced Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman with Trevor Jones and Geoff Downes.
Other clients included: Asia, Coldplay, Duran Duran, Jamiroquai, Bryan Ferry, Oasis, XTC, The Jam, Oasis, Blur Queen, Bob Dylan, Def Leppard, The Jam, Frank Zappa, Suede and Placebo. Peter Gabriel recorded his 3rd LP and mastered “Us” at The Townhouse.
Due to the acoustic properties of his studio #2, known as The Stone Room – and perhaps thanks to the spectacular sound achieved for the drums on Phil Collins’ hit In The Air Tonigh – it was frequently called upon for superlative drum and percussion recordings. The room is featured in Bob Dylan’s 1987 film, Hearts Of Fire.
