MARAVILLOSO
Gracias Marcelo!
?? London’s Soho is a place to take the day easy and get ready to enjoy it: cool cafés, record shops, bookshops, antiques, squares, unmissable shopping and a lot of Rock history.
Just metres from Soho Square is an alley called St. Anne’s Court. At No. 17 was the site of Trident Studios, which operated from 1968 to 1981.
Despite The Beatles‘ familiarity and relationship with the EMI studios located in St. John’s Wood (later, thanks to them, called Abbey Road) the Fab 4 recorded several songs at Trident, as well as several of the artists they had signed to their Apple label (such as Mary Hopkin, Billy Preston or James Taylor).
The main reason was that the Soho studio, which opened in 1968, had an exceptional 8-channel recording console, as opposed to the 4-channel one EMI Abbey Road had at the time. In addition Trident, even then, had the Dolby noise reduction system.
One of the most wonderful Beatles songs, as well as being their biggest selling single worldwide, was Hey Jude. And it was recorded at Trident. Several takes of songs from the White Album and the Abbey Road Long Play were also recorded here: “Dear Prudence”, “Honey Pie”, “Savoy Truffle” “Martha My Dear” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”.
Other artists who used Trident:
The Beatles as solo artists also made use of these studios: John Lennon with his The Plastic Ono Band recorded “Cold Turkey”, George Harrison recorded parts of his monumental triple album All Things Must Pass and Ringo Starr his hit single It Don’t Come Easy.
But David Bowie also recorded none other than his The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, which featured Rick Wakeman on keyboards. At the time, in the early 1970s, Rick was sort of Trident’s official pianist. Bowie also recorded Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane here.
Genesis recorded A Trick of the Tail and Wind And Wuthering in 1976 – those were the days when you could record two great albums in a year and still be successful – and the earlier Gabriel-era Nursery Crime and Trespass.
Queen recorded their first three albums and sections of their 4th LP, A Night at The Opera, at Trident as well as at, for example, Olympic Studios (see section).
Supertramp and their Crime of the Century. T. Rex and Electric Warrior, Jeff Beck Wired and Beck-Ola.
The Rolling Stones recorded parts of their Midnight Rambler for their album Let It Bleed.
Canadians Rush recorded their epic LP, Hemispheres, Judas Priest their Stained Class and Lou Reed, Transformer. Bob Geldof‘s Boomtown Rats, the famous I Don’t Like Mondays. Manfred Mann, his single My Name Is Jack.
Elton John recorded his second – and an eponymous – solo album in 1970, which included his first big hit: Your Song. The piano used on this song is the same one used for Hey Jude and belonged to Trident. Elton also recorded Tumbleweed Connection, 17-11-70, Honky Château, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
At the time of writing (2015) the site is recognisable by the metal plaques at its entrance. It is still called Trident (Sound Studios) in honour of those years and recordings are made for TV, radio and multimedia.
Varias tomas de canciones del Álbum Blanco y del Long Play Abbey Road, también se registraron aquí: “Dear Prudence”, “Honey Pie”, “Savoy Truffle” “Martha My Dear” “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”.
Bowie también registró aquí Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Aladdin Sane.
Supertramp y su Crime of the Century. T. Rex y Electric Warrior, Jeff Beck Wired y Beck-Ola.
The Rolling Stones grabaron partes de su Midnight Rambler para su disco Let It Bleed.
Los canadienses Rush registraron aquí su épico LP, Hemispheres, Judas Priest su Stained Class y Lou Reed, Transformer. The Boomtown Rats de Bob Geldof, la famosa I Don’t Like Mondays. Manfred Mann, su single My Name Is Jack.
Elton también registró en este lugar Tumbleweed Connection, 17-11-70, Honky Château, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
